Just Shoot the Film

So for the latest assignment of this ever extensive project, we shot on film. This was the first time in my life that I ever interacted with a genuine "film" camera. I played with my grandfather's vintage photo cameras, and I've seen how films strips are processed, but I never used one for the purposes of creating a serious image. And it was something. The actual filming part was a nightmare, never finding the right time to meet up with each other, and always missing the "sweet spot" of it still being daylight. But the act of taking the images was interesting. On one hand I enjoyed the old school (and albeit hipster) mentality I had taking images of anything around me. I found myself entrance with the constant winding back of the film, and the loud click sounds, and it was rather serene having these noises accompanied with the nature landscape. On the other, it heightened my anxiety even more not knowing what the finished will look like and if I screwed something up. So while I still admire the techniques and artistry of film, knowing my screw-up self I will stick to digital.

  1. Noooooo. The more you shoot, the less scary it is. Go alone. Keep the stakes low. I have a feeling you would fall a little bit in love if you could just have that time on your own to be free to play. The assignment is an exercise to give you a taste, but now you can explore it with time and freedom.
