The Art House Cinema Experience
For me, the main enjoyment I get from being a film geek is the movie going experience. From the 20+ screen megaplexes with the state of the art IMAX projectors, to the tiny independent theaters with only 2 screens, I find the charm in all of them, and I eagerly look forward to when I get the chance to go. So reading this, brought me somewhat heartbreak and not at all surprised by this. Where I live, there are three art house/independent theaters. Two of them are 4-screen theaters that get insanely busy once Oscar season comes, but for the rest of the year they're pretty mellow/deserted with only retirees as they're main audience. The other is a true art house theater, with two screens, and stuck smack dabb in the middle of a shopping center. I've never been to this one, and from the looks of it, no one else has. I'm pretty lucky to say that despite being in a gentrified suburban area, I have three theaters that show non-blockbuster movies and they're around a 45 minute drive. But still I know that they are primarily successful in December-January, and not a lot of 20-somethings would willingly go there with their friends on a Friday night.
