Experimenting with Experimental

When I signed up for the class it was mainly to fill the last of my production credits. I thought this class could be easy because "any thing can pass as experimental", from the trippy visuals to just bullshitting and saying it was intentional. So that was the mindset I came in with. This was also before I realized that Shannon would be the professor, so this quickly changed once I saw who would be teaching it.
My time in this experimental class has been both interesting, frustrating, and all around an enjoyable learning experience. I went on and on (and on) about how I don't have the same filmmaking drive as the majority of the class, so at times I felt out of place. But I did love working with big groups on making the short film. I loved the music video project because of the collaboration and the creativity of bouncing ideas off of each other. I also enjoyed the presentations about all of the experimental filmmakers. It helped making experimental films a bit more personal seeing those who embrace and try to leave their mark on an already eccentric style of filmmaking.
Overall, despite my misguided perception of it, I really did enjoy being part of this class. Did it make me a better filmmaker? In some respects, yes. It gave me a little bit of confidence and encouraged me to do more group filmmaking.

  1. I'm so glad you took the class Maggie. You may not intend to be a filmmaker, but your presentation on Marlon Riggs was something I knew you would knock out of the park (and you did) and your self-portrait was something I hope that built your confidence and helped you see that you can absolutely make beautiful, interesting work.
